原文： Taking refuge from the summer heat, I walked into a mom-and-pop zaap for po (雜貨鋪; general store) looking for a straw hat. The shopkeeper disappeared into the back of the store and reemerged a minute later with a half-dozen designs. After a long, unrushed process of deliberation, I walked out with a fedora for all of HK$32 (US$4). Thanks to its relative isolation from the urban population, Cheung Chau has been spared the scourge of gentrification. As a result, stores and restaurants on the island still operate under much the same business model as they did in the 50s and 60s. Without greedy landlords raising their rent every few years, shop owners can stock more creatively and sell less aggressively. Elsewhere in the city, however, the term "general store" has all but disappeared from the retail lexicon.
