By Jason Y. Ng

No City for Slow Men
, History in Our Midst, Jason Y. Ng

原文:Up the hill-hugging stairs of Ladder Street, a hundred yards above the hoi polloi cluttering Queen's Road, a pair of century-old banyans rise out of a granite wall. Mossy branches stretch far, aerial roots sway. Weathered trunks lean with avuncular benevolence. Amidst the thick tangle of alleys and lanes, every tree has a story to tell, each stone reveals a tale. Together they bear witness to a community woven of courage and grit, by the wheel of history that spares neither sweat nor blood. Sheung Wan is a living tree, its future ever evolving and its past a testament to the sacrifices of those who came before us. So there we have it, 170 years of history in a single neighbourhood, a mere five-minute walk from the humdrum of Central.
