It does the poem injustice when it gets reduced to only the discussion on loss of religious faith.
Everything surrounds the ‘internal difference’ in the poem. The oxymoron in ‘Heavenly Hurt’ and ‘imperial affliction’, heavily loaded of Christian diction, is heralded in stanza 1. Christian faith now longer promises hope. The oppressive ‘Slant of light’ dissociate from its symbolic meanings of hope, enlightenment, wisdom.
The simile in stanza 1 further elaborates this contradiction. ‘Light’ has no weight, different from ‘the Heft’, the weight, heaviness. Despair, oppression, and hopelessness rub off on the ‘light’, stripped of its association with hopeful ideas.
The caesura in ‘the Meanings, are’ imitates the speaker’s hesitation, loss of faith in meanings.
Christianity is highly associated with logos, the Word. ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’ Imagine when meanings suffer from ‘internal difference’, detached from their intrinsic meanings, how can we not lose faith? The basis of Christianity is deconstructed in this poem. Dickinson opens up the meaning of light, religion, and hope, inviting us to reflect on them.
The final stanza, for some, unifies satisfyingly the poem. The slant of light is fading and sliding down to the frame of the window of the church where the speaker, namely Dickinson, stays. When the light ‘goes’, it reminds the speaker of the feeling of ‘Death’, turning and walking away from her. That’s the first positive interpretation. I’ve read another interpretation somewhere, which I find more complex and I prefer. Death brings alongside emptiness. Having lost the meaning of hope, light is now linked to despair. In this sense, the speaker has both lost hope and despair, facing the finale of life, of nothingness and emptiness. What remains is the uncertainty of death. The dash in the final line begs the question about the afterlife. Would it hopeful even if i’ve gained the entrance to Heaven, the very source of ambiguity, from which the light, ‘seal Despair’, and ‘affliction’ are sent.
